July 2024

Following a successful training course in 2023, UK ISAR conducted another management training session at the Union Jack Club in London, targeting all team coordinators and deputy coordinators. This training emphasized the importance of effective communication, teamwork, and coordination under high-pressure conditions. Throughout the program, the UK ISAR Capability Team reinforced its commitment to cultivating a highly skilled and adaptable team, capable of leading successful search and rescue missions and providing critical assistance during crises.
Building on the success of last year’s training, Gordon Macmillan conducted another engaging session on Cultural Awareness. As an expert in the field, Gordon offered valuable insights and practical advice to enhance the team’s understanding and sensitivity towards diverse cultures encountered during search and rescue operations. Following this, Katherine Schweit, the creator of the FBI’s Active Shooter Program, delivered an informative presentation on decision making and the importance of information versus intelligence.
On the second day, UK ISAR was grateful to welcome additional guest speakers, including Paolo Vaccari, who delivered a presentation highlighting the importance of flexible response, sharing his experiences during the recent Libya floods. Additionally, Belit Tasdemir from AKUT spoke about his experiences during the Turkey earthquake response in 2023, providing team members with the opportunity to compare and contrast these experiences with those of the UK ISAR response.
During the training, Paul Burnham from Protect and Prepare Ltd delivered an interactive session on Global Risk and Threat specifically tailored for the UK ISAR team. The session covered a wide range of topics, including geopolitical considerations, security challenges, and emerging risks.
UK ISAR was privileged to be joined by Sebastian Rhodes Stampa, a guest speaker from the United Nations, who delivered a highly informative session on INSARAG. With his extensive expertise in disaster response and coordination, Sebastian shed light on the significance of INSARAG and provided a look forward into where INSARAG is heading.
